Blue Hen swim teams race to sweep of Loyola

9:16 a.m., Jan. 23, 2006--The University of Delaware swimming and diving teams dominated the action as the Fightin’ Blue Hens swept Loyola College of Maryland in a dual meet held Saturday afternoon in Baltimore.

Freshmen Katie Zoretic and Alyson Oliver each won two individual events to lead the UD women’s team to a 160-78 victory. It was the ninth straight victory for the women’s team, which improved to 11-1.

Matt Abbruzzese and Brendan Spencer each won two individual events to pace the UD men’s team to a 135-94 triumph. The men’s team improved to 4-7.

Both UD teams will close out the dual meet season on Friday, Jan. 27, at Bucknell University. The Hens will then begin preparations for the Colonial Athletic Association championship meet to be held Feb. 22-25 at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.

In Saturday’s meet, Zoretic won the 500 freestyle (5:15.21) and 1,650 freestyle (17:55.91) while Oliver swept the diving events, winning the one-meter event with 251.40 points and the three-meter event with 237.67.

Also for the Hens, Emily Smathers won the 100 backstroke (1:00.69) and swam a leg of the winning 200 medley relay (1:51.70), Kendall Warren won the 100 freestyle (54.73) and was second in the 200 freestyle (2:00.33), Michelle Stephens captured the 100 butterfly (1:00.39), Sarah Begley won the 50 freestyle (24.97) and 200 medley relay, Stephanie House won the 200 freestyle (1:58.41) and was second in the 100 butterfly (1:00.66), Kellie Pastore won the 200 medley relay and was second in the 200 individual medley (2:15.24), and Maryann Walker won the 200 medley relay and was second in the 50 freestyle (25.25).

For the UD men’s team, Abbruzzese won both diving events, capturing the one-meter with 257.10 points and the three-meter with 245.02, while Spencer captured the 200 individual medley (2:00.17) and 100 backstroke (54.90) and swam a leg on the winning 200 medley relay team with Mark Erdosy, James Lavender, and Andrew Zinn (1:39.70). Zinn also won the 50 freestyle (21.50).

Also for the UD men, Levan Beridze won the 100 freestyle (47.92) and was second in the 50 freestyle (21.81), Troy Sattgast won the 1,650 freestyle (16:50.68) and was second in the 100 butterfly (54.33), John Ohlhaver was second in the 100 backstroke (56.19) and 200 medley relay (1:43.50), Adam Blomberg was second in the 100 freestyle (48.48) and 200 freestyle (1:45.80), and Garrett Arant was second in the 500 freestyle (4:54.98) and 1,650 freestyle (16:57.04).
