Delaware’s DelCampo signs with AFL2 team

Trip DelCampo
9:33 a.m., Jan. 11, 2006--Former University of Delaware football standout offensive lineman Trip DelCampo has signed a free agent contract with the Memphis XPlorers, defending champions of Arena Football League 2.

DelCampo was one of three players assigned to the team earlier this month, joining former Marshall University quarterback Stan Hill and wide receiver and defensive back Remuise Johnson of the University of Kansas.

Arena Football League 2 is a developmental league that feeds players to the Arena Football League. Memphis will open the season April 1 against the Tennessee Valley Vipers.

“Trip comes to us highly recommended as a player,” Memphis Head Coach Danton Barto said. “We look for him to come in and be a very good pass-blocking lineman in this league.”

DelCampo, a 6-foot 5-inch, 305-pounder, will play both offensive and defensive line for the XPlorers.

A native of Rehoboth Beach and a standout at Cape Henlopen High School, DelCampo graduated from UD in 2005 following a standout career as an offensive tackle for the Fightin’ Blue Hens.

He was a starter in 2003, when the Hens went 15-1 and captured the NCAA Division I-AA national championship, and in 2004, when UD went 9-4 and advanced to the championship tournament quarterfinals. He was selected first team All-Atlantic 10 and All-East as a senior.

Several other former Hens are in camps with Arena Football League teams as the senior league prepares to open its season later this month. Joe Minucci, who started his career with the Tennessee Valley Vipers in Arena Football League 2, will begin his second season with the Nashville Kats after being named to the 2005 All-Rookie Team.

Two Hens, quarterback Matt Nagy and wide receiver Jamin Elliott, are with the Georgia Force, defending AFL National Conference champions. Nagy had a breakout season in 2005, leading the Force to the Arena Bowl XIX championship game, where they fell 51-48 to the Colorado Crush. He was named second team All-AFL. Elliott, who was signed prior to pre-season camp, played in NFL Europe last spring.
