Festival of Words at UD March 4
Middle and high school students and teachers will participate in a day of reading, writing, lectures, workshops, discussions and contests. Award-winning author of books for young adults, Ellen Wittlinger, will be the morning keynote speaker. Her books include Hard Love, Heart on My Sleeve, What's in a Name, and Gracie's Girl. Her newest book, Blind Faith, will be released in June. George Ancona, award-winning photo-essayist and author of books for young readers, keynotes the afternoon session with a talk about digital storytelling. Participants are asked to read The House of Scorpion, Phineas Gage: A Gruesome but True Story About Brain Science, First Part Last, Birdland, Cuba 15, After, Persepolis and Milkweed in preparation for festival break out sessions. Break-out session discussion topics include, students' rights as a follow up to After; what constitutes personality as a follow up to Phineas Gage; what it means to celebrate a quinicera as a follow up to Cuba 15; cloning and other bioethical issues as a follow-up to House of the Scorpion; digital storytelling as a follow-up to Birdland; teenage parenting as a follow up to First Part Last; and blogging, wikis and instant messaging as a follow up to Hard Love and Heart on My Sleeve. The Student Muslim Association will talk about life in the Muslim Middle East as a follow up to Persepolis, and Anne Jaffe, one of America's few remaining holocaust survivors, talks about her experiences as a follow up to Milkweed. Festival contributors include the Delaware Center for Teacher Education, the Delaware Department of Education, the Delaware Teacher Center, the Delaware Reading/Writing Project, the Education Resource Center and UD's English department.
