Riccio, Mulhern cited by Touchdown Club

10:35 a.m., Feb. 6, 2006--University of Delaware quarterback Sonny Riccio and linebacker John Mulhern took the top awards as seniors on the 2005 Fightin’ Blue Hens football team were honored during the annual Blue Hen Touchdown Club banquet on Friday night at Clayton Hall.

The 16 seniors were recognized by the Blue Hen Touchdown Club and UD Head Coach K.C. Keeler for their accomplishments and contributions.

Riccio was named the outstanding senior offensive player and also received the Baker-Taylor Leadership Award and the Captains Award, and Mulhern was named the outstanding senior defensive player.

Defensive tackle Tom Parks was named the outstanding senior lineman, wide receiver Joe Bleymaier was named the outstanding senior at end and also received the Newark Elks Club Scholar-Athlete Award as the senior with the highest undergraduate cumulative grade point average, and punter Mike Weber and deep snapper Brett Wharton shared the Unsung Hero Award.

Other seniors recognized were offensive tackle Rob Bergman, wide receiver David Boler, student assistant coach and former quarterback T.J. DiMuzio, wide receiver Brian Ingram, defensive tackle Randall James, tight end Justin LaForgia, running back Niquan Lee, defensive lineman Lou Samba, offensive lineman Brian Sims and defensive back Zach Thomas.

In 2005, Riccio threw for 1,869 yards and 13 touchdowns and rushed for 413 yards and four touchdowns as the Hens finished 6-5. Mulhern had 97 tackles, 3.5 sacks and an interception, and was named second team All-Atlantic 10 Conference.

Parks was named first team All-Atlantic 10 and All-East as he recorded 31 tackles, five sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss. Bleymaier caught 15 passes for 170 yards and three touchdowns before suffering a season-ending spleen injury in the victory over James Madison University.

Weber was the UD punter for three seasons and had 17 punts in 2005 before suffering a knee injury. Wharton came to the Hens as a walk-on and worked his way into the line-up as the center on kicks and punts.
