Synchronized skaters win Eastern sectionals

3:11 p.m., Feb. 1, 2006--Competitors from the University of Delaware won the collegiate division championship at the 2006 Eastern Synchronized Team Skating Championships held Jan. 26-29 in Duluth, Ga.

The UD team skated to a program called "Dreams," in which they took spectators into the world of childhood dreams.

Coaches Megan O'Donnell and Wendy Deppe attributed the strong showing to a stepped up training program that has included extra ice time, weight training, aerobics and yoga.

By winning the sectional competition, the UD team is now qualified to compete at the U.S. Synchronized Team Skating Championships to be held in Grand Rapids, Mich., in late February. At nationals, UD will take on Miami University of Ohio, Western Michigan University, Michigan State University and the University of Michigan, among others.

In Georgia, UD competed against teams from Syracuse University, Boston University, Boston College, the University of New Hampshire, Cornell University and the University of Massachusetts.
