UD solar energy pioneer to be honored

Karl W. Böer
10:57 a.m., Feb. 10, 2006--A special colloquium on May 4 is being held in honor of Karl W. Böer, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Physics and Solar Energy at UD, on the occasion of his 80th birthday. The event will be hosted by the Institute of Solid State Physics, Technical University of Berlin; the WISTA-Management GmbH Berlin-Aldershof; and the Institute of Physics, Humboldt University, Berlin.

An internationally recognized pioneer in solar energy, Böer is a fellow of the American Solar Energy Society and the American Physical Society. He was the founder and first director of UD's Institute of Energy Conversion and was awarded UD's highest award, the Medal of Distinction, in 1998. He has published extensively in his field and holds 28 patents.

In 1987, the University established the Karl W. Böer Solar Energy Medal of Merit in his honor. The first was awarded to former President Jimmy Carter, and last year the medal was awarded to Yoshihiro Hamakawa of the University in Shiga in Japan.
