Neviaser new Blue Hen defensive coordinator

Rob Neviaser
2:44 p.m., Dec. 13, 2005--University of Delaware Head Coach K.C. Keeler has announced the appointment of Rob Neviaser as defensive coordinator to replace Dave Cohen, who left the Fightin’ Blue Hens to accept a position as head coach at Hofstra University.

In addition, Keeler has named Jim Turner associate head coach and has added Ben Albert to the staff as linebackers coach.

Neviaser, who has served as defensive line coach at UD for the past four seasons, will add the role of defensive coordinator to his responsibilities in 2006. A 1993 graduate of Williams College, Neviaser was an assistant coach at King’s College, Harvard University, Boston College and Yale University before joining the Hens in 2002.

His units have consistently helped the Hens rank among the Atlantic 10 Conference leaders in rushing defense, finishing third in 2005 at 119.6 yards per game, and have averaged 30.2 sacks per season. The 2005 squad, led by All-American defensive tackle Tom Parks, ranked fourth in the Atlantic 10 with 30 sacks.

Turner, who will begin his second season with the UD staff in
2006, previously was an assistant at Northeastern University, Louisiana Tech, Harvard and Temple University. His offensive line unit last season helped UD rank third in the Atlantic 10 in rushing, with 195.0 yards per game, and paved the way for All-American running back Omar Cuff, who ranked second in the conference with 109.5 yards per game.

Albert comes to UD with nine years of college coaching experience, most recently at an Atlantic 10 rival, the University of Richmond, where he was defensive line and special teams coach in 2004 under first-year head coach Dave Clawson. He began his coaching career in 1996 at the University Massachusetts, coached his first stint at Richmond in 1997-00, moved to Rutgers University for the 2001 season, and went back to Massachusetts for two seasons in 2002-03 before returning to Richmond. He was a three-year starting defensive lineman at Massachusetts, where he earned All-Yankee Conference honors in 1994 and posted career totals of 187 tackles and 14 sacks.

Two other coaches are leaving the UD staff, with defensive backs coach Isaac Collins having resigned and graduate assistant coach Lyle Hemphill leaving to become an defensive backs assistant coach at Hofstra.

UD is conducting a search to fill Collins’ position.
