Hofstra tops Delaware in men’s basketball

Calvin Cannon scored a career-high 17 points in the loss to Hofstra.
12:28 p.m., Dec. 5, 2005--The University of Delaware men’s basketball team fell 79-65 to host Hofstra University in a Colonial Athletic Association game played Saturday in Hempstead, N.Y.

Senior forward Harding Nana scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds and junior guard Calvin Cannon scored a career-high 17 points. Senior guard Andrew Washington scored 13 points.

Hofstra got off to a hot start and took a 43-25 lead into the half. UD came out strong to open the second half and cut the lead to eight points before the Pride again pulled away.

“We fought hard tonight in the second half but we just dug ourselves too deep of a hole,” UD Head Coach David Henderson said. “They were more physical than us today. We’ve been a good rebounding team so far this season but Hofstra beat us on the boards today.”

The loss was the fifth straight for the Fightin’ Blue Hens, who fell to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the CAA.

The Hens will attempt to break the skid when they travel to Rider University for a game at 3 p.m., Saturday. Rider is 2-3, with victories over Monmouth and Boston University.

The Rider game will be the last of eight consecutive road games for the Hens, who will play their first game at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Dec. 19, against the University of North Carolina Greensboro. The Spartans are 4-3.
