Delaware’s Grant signs two-year lacrosse deal

10:23 a.m., Dec. 16, 2005--Former University of Delaware star John Grant Jr. has signed a two-year contract with the Rochester Knighthawks of the National Lacrosse League. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Under the contract, Grant will return for his seventh season with Rochester. He holds the franchise’s all-time records for goals (242), assists (269) and points (511). He also holds numerous single-season marks with the highlight being his 52-goal, 105-point season in 2002.

In 2005, Grant tied his own single-season points record, totaling 105 points in 15 games. In league history, he ranks seventh all-time in goals and 10th in points.

Grant was named the National Lacrosse League’s Rookie of the Year in 2000 and has been named to the NLL All-Pro team five times.

Grant was the first overall pick in the 2000 NLL entry draft following a stellar career at UD, where he scored 96 goals and had 81 assists in two seasons with the Fightin’ Blue Hens. He was named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division I All-American team in 1999, when he led UD to the NCAA Division I lacrosse tournament quarterfinals.

Grant was inducted into the UD Athletics Hall of Fame earlier this year.

The Knighthawks will open their season on the road against the Colorado Mammoth on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006.
