Swiss School offers UD degree via distance-learning

11:30 a.m., Dec. 8, 2005--The University of Delaware is offering a bachelor’s degree in hospitality to students at the Swiss School of Tourism and Hospitality, located near Davos, Switzerland, through distance-learning courses.

Swiss School graduates, who come from 50 countries, will study for the degree through distance-learning courses taught by the same faculty who teach those subjects on the UD campus.

Fred DeMicco, ARAMARK Chair and chairperson of the Department of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management (HRIM) at UD, said the Swiss School has long-established partnership agreements with the UD’s hospitality program in several areas.

“Having the Swiss School as an official University of Delaware distance learning site will now allow us to deliver our courses at any time--and to students who either reside at the Swiss School or have taken employment around the world,” DeMicco said. “Switzerland will be our hospitality education hub to reach students globally.”

“This online distance-education program provides working adults access to the education they need to keep up in a competitive market,” Beat Wicki, chief executive officer of the Swiss School, said. “Now that credit transfer agreements are in place, participants can easily work toward their bachelor’s degree by taking many of the general degree requirements on our campus for credit toward their degree from the University of Delaware.”

The bachelor’s degree in HRIM was established at UD in 1988. The curriculum consists of liberal arts, business and specialized courses in technical applications for the hotel, restaurant and related industries. Theory and skill-based courses are enhanced by an emphasis on practical work experience.

Swiss School students and alumni who register through the Swiss School are eligible for a special tuition rate.
