Math prof elected officer of professional society
SIAM is the representative society for applied mathematics, whose members include applied and computational mathematicians, computer scientists, numerical analysts, engineers, statisticians, mathematics educators and students. The organization has more than 10,000 individual members and 400 institutional members, which include colleges, universities, corporations and research organizations. Besides holding an annual meeting, specialized conferences, short courses and workshops, SIAM publishes 11 peer-reviewed research journals and approximately 25 books each year. Her research interests include fluid flows (especially polymer fluid flows), transonic aerodynamics (flight near the speed of sound), mathematical modeling of physical systems and asymptotic and perturbation methods, especially as applied to nonlinear, partial differential equations systems. A graduate of the University of Rochester, Cook-Ioannidis received her doctorate from Cornell University and joined the UD faculty in 1983 after 10 years on the faculty at the University of California, Los Angeles. She serves on the board of governors of the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications at the University of Minnesota, on the advisory committee for mathematical sciences at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and on the scientific advisory committee of the Fields Institute of the University of Toronto. She is the co-author with J.D. Cole of Transonic Aerodynamics. At UD, Cook-Ioannidis has a secondary appointment as a professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and serves as associate dean of engineering for womens programs. Article by Sue Moncure |
