Cohen accepts position as Hofstra head coach
Replacing Cohen as UD defensive coordinator will be Rob Neviaser, who has served as defensive line coach since 2002. Neviaser joined the staff of the Hens after five years as defensive line coach at Yale University. Hofstra announced the hiring of Cohen, a Long Island native, during a press conference held Tuesday morning on the campus in Hempstead, N.Y. An emotional Cohen said this is a very exciting time, and that he looks forward to being closer to his family in suburban New York. Leaving Delaware was difficult, Cohen said during an interview following the press conference, because I was not leaving just a job, I was leaving a family. “Dave is ready to become a head coach,” UD Head Coach K.C. Keeler said. “We are excited for him because he has looked forward to this for a long time. It’s a great opportunity for him, and we wish him the best. Hofstra is very fortunate to hire such a quality coach like Dave.” Cohen replaces Joe Gardi, who retired following the 2005 season. Gardi had been head coach of the Pride since 1990. Cohens most recent stint at UD was his second on campus. He served on the UD coaching staff under retired College Football Hall of Fame coach Harold R. Tubby Raymond from 1994-98, serving two seasons as defensive line coach and three as linebackers coach. He left the Hens to accept a position as defensive coordinator at Fordham University, which he helped direct to a Patriot League championship. Cohen returned to UD as defensive coordinator under Keeler and in 2003 helped guide the Hens to a 15-1 record and the NCAA Division I-AA national championship. Cohen received a bachelors degree in business management from Long Island University-C.W. Post and a master's degree in education administration from the State University of New York at Albany. While at C.W. Post, he was a two-year starter at defensive tackle and earned College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-Region honors as a senior. He began his coaching career as linebacker coach and strength coach at Albany before moving on to Lafayette College, where he served four seasons as linebacker and defensive line coach. The tentative 2006 UD football schedule includes a visit by Hofstra to Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 14. Cohen said that under his leadership, he hopes the Pride will play hard, in your face, relentless, aggressive football. |
