April 13, 2006--William J. Holloway, M.D., 80, a former clinical associate professor in the University of Delaware Department of Biology, died March 5.
Dr. Holloway, son of the late Fred and Winifred Jackson Holloway, served as a clinical associate professor of biology at UD from 1973-82.
A graduate of Western Maryland College and the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Dr. Holloway served an internship at the Delaware Hospital (now Wilmington Hospital). He was a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Korea during the war from 1952-54.
Following his Army service, he became a specialist in infectious diseases. He was founder and director for the infectious disease laboratory for Christiana Care Health System, where he served as senior attending physician. Dr. Holloway also was the principal investigator for the HIV Community Program for Christiana Care.
Professional memberships include the American College of Physicians, where he was a master and governor for the State of Delaware from 1988-92. Dr. Holloway also was a fellow in the Infectious Disease Society of America and in the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was a past president of the Delaware Academy of Medicine, the State Board of Medical Examiners and the Delaware Lung Association. Dr. Holloway also was a long-term member of the editorial board of the Delaware Medical Journal.
The author of more than 200 publications, mostly relating to his research on pneumonia, cancer and HIV-AIDS, Dr. Holloway was well known nationally to experts in his field, and he also traveled around the world presenting the results of his research. The annual Infectious Disease Symposium, which he initiated in 1963, continues to this day.
A mentor to young physicians specializing in infectious diseases, Dr. Holloway was well-liked by medical staff and patients for his easy-going bedside manner. He enjoyed international travel, classical music and poetry, particularly the works of Emily Dickinson.
Predeceased by his parents and his brother, Fred G. Holloway, Dr. Holloway is survived by his wife, Nita; his sons, William J. Jr. “Jack,” and his wife, Maryann, of Wilmington, and Phillip, and his wife, Kathy of Harleysville, Pa.; daughters Gail Hradek, and her husband Art, of Glen Ellyn, Ill., Carol Peoples, and her husband Joe, of Wilmington, Susan Holloway, and her fiancé, Tom Sarnese, of Collingswood, N.J., and Judy Hanus, and her husband, Tom, of Hockessin; his first wife, Martha Holloway, of Wilmington; and 18 grandchildren, Michael, Lauren, Andrea, Amanda, Richard, Kristin, Adrienne, Andrew, Emily, Brooke, Evan, Hilary, Jonathan, Rebecca, William, Corey, Veronica and John.
A memorial service and celebration of Dr. Holloway's life was held March 11, at Grace United Methodist Church in Wilmington.
