Delaware tennis teams split Bucknell matches
1:28 p.m., April 26, 2006--The University of Delaware tennis teams split matches at Bucknell University on Tuesday afternoon, with the women's team winning 5-2 and the men's team falling 4-3. It was the final competition of the year for both Fightin' Blue Hens teams. The UD women closed the season at 10-7 by winning their sixth match in the last seven. Susan Pollack defeated Chelsea Mills 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles as she improved to 17-7 on the year, while Liz Perlow became the 15th player in school history to win 40 career matches after her 6-1, 4-6, 10-4 win over Ashley Globerman at No. 3. Sari Shuster posted a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Caitlin Baffa at No. 4 as she improved to 47-29 in her career, while Alexa Dragonette improved to 21-13 after a 6-4, 6-0 triumph over JoAnna Grossman at No. 5. Brittany Barsky won her seventh straight match and raised her record to 18-3 on the season with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Camille Simonetti at No. 6. Paulina Gamboa was Bucknell's lone singles winner as she posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Amanda Campbell at No. 2. Pollack and Campbell extended their school single-season doubles wins record by improving to 22-6 with an 8-0 shutout of Gamboa and Tiffany Card at No. 1. However, Mills and Baffa defeated Dragonette and Barsky 8-5 at No. 2 and Grossman and Globerman downed Shuster and Julie Schiller 8-6 at No. 3 at the Bison took the doubles point. The UD men finished the season at 8-8. Jon Schwartz edged Ben Young 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (6) at No. 5 singles as he improved to 13-5 on the year, while Josh Levine improved to 10-7 with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Sidharth Makkar at No. 6. Ira Beibeisen defeated Jesse Carl 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles for the Bison, while Asher Salam downed Nolan Greenberg 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2. Ryan Sandburg topped Adam Liebman 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3, and Jonathan Brenner posted a 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-4 victory over Josh Ditman at No. 4. Carl and Greenberg recorded an 8-6 win over Reibeisen and Salam at No. 1 doubles for the Hens, while Jason Hanschmann and Philip Wayne improved to 8-3 after a 9-7 victory over Sandburg and Brenner at No. 2. Schwartz and Levine upped their record to 8-6 on the year as the duo defeated Young and Daniel Beknarek 8-4 at No. 3 to complete the doubles sweep for UD. |
