Jackson Ultima to show new hinged skate boot

11 a.m., April 6, 2006--Champion figures skaters and coaches will be on hand for demonstrations of the new Jackson Ultima Skate Company ProFlex hinged boot system from 4-6 p.m., Monday, April 10, at the Fred Rust Ice Arena on the campus of the University of Delaware in Newark.

The hinged boot was developed by James G. Richards, Distinguished Professor of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Sciences at UD, in conjunction with Jackson Ultima of Waterloo, Canada, which is sponsoring the demonstration. The company manufactures the new skate at its facility in Canada.

The event will include on-ice demonstrations by U.S. National Team members Alissa Czisny, Amanda Evora, Jonathan Cassar and Mark Ladwig, among others.

There will be presentations by Richards, Malvin Loveridge, vice president of manufacturing and product development for Jackson Ultima, and Angela D. Smith, an orthopedic surgeon at the Sports Medicine and Performance Center at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Also on hand will be national and international coaches, including Ron Ludington, director of UD's Ice Skating Science Development Center, Kerry Leitch, Priscilla Hill and Julie Berlin.

The hinged boot is designed to reduce joint injuries that plague many competitive skaters by allowing their ankles to flex and thereby cushion their landings.

“With the hinged design, you can land with your heel relatively high in the air, increasing the landing time and resulting in a lot less stress on the knees, hips and spine,” Richards said. “The traditional boot is so rigid that it's like putting your ankle in a cast. It forces skaters to land flat-footed, which leads to the injuries you see so often, sometimes to the foot itself but primarily to the joints.”

For details on the event, contact Malvin Loveridge of Jackson Ultima at (800) 263-1666, ext. 232.
