Ex-Hen Kevin Mench on home run streak
10:13 a.m., April 27, 2006--Former University of Delaware baseball star Kevin Mench is on a power tear with the Texas Rangers, hitting home runs in each of the last six games. Mench hit a grand slam on Wednesday night in a 6-4 loss to the Oakland Athletics. It was the second grand slam during Mench's home run streak and the third of his career. It came in the fourth inning off Oakland pitcher Kiko Calero and put the Rangers up 4-1. The streak is a Texas club record and Mench is threatening the Major League Baseball record for home runs in consecutive games, which stands at eight. That record is shared by Ken Griffey Jr., Don Mattingly and Dale Long. After a day off, Mench and the Rangers will return to action Friday when they open a weekend series at Cleveland. Mench is having a monster season for the Rangers to date, batting .343 with six homers, five doubles and 20 runs batted in. He captured the America East Conference “triple crown” in 1998 when he batted .455, led the NCAA with 33 home runs and knocked in 72 runs to earn Collegiate Baseball Magazine National Player of the Year and consensus All-America honors. He helped lead the Hens to a three-year record of 123-45, two conference titles and NCAA tournament berths in 1998 and 1999. |
