Students donate hair to Locks of Love

3:17 p.m., April 18, 2006--Samson and Delilah would have been amazed by the 62 students who came to the Perkins Student Center Gallery April 13 to donate 70 feet of hair to Locks of Love.

Locks of Love is a nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss. It's web site is at [www.locksoflove.org/].

Christine Faulkner, a sophomore in the visual communications program, said she and a friend have a book of things they want to do before they die and “one was to grow our hair long enough to donate it to Locks of Love. It's for the children. I'm donating 10 inches.”

Senior Katrina Salvatoriello, a math education major, said it's a good cause. “It's wonderful if you can do something for others. I know people who had to wear wigs, and this is an important cause.”

The daylong event sponsored by Alpha Xi Delta sorority and coordinated by Denise Murray, a junior secondary-math major, attracted 62 students and stylists from six local salons who donated their time and skill.

Participating salons included, J.C. Penney's at Christiana Mall, Matilda's, Maureen's, Perry Anthony Salon and Spa Network, Super Cuts and Town & Country.

Stylists cut hair from 10 a.m. until 6:30 p.m., giving donors attractive contemporary styles that made them look good and will keep them cool this summer.

Murray, who has been working with Locks of Love since she was in high school, said Alpha Xi Delta would like to make the Locks of Love “shearathon” an annual event. Last year, she said, 75 students participated but they only collected 68 feet of hair. This year, participants who got cuts during the year saved their hair and brought it to the April 13 event.
