Poet Lucille Clifton at UD Dec. 2 3:07 p.m., Nov. 30, 2004--Lucille Clifton, an award-winning poet, will read from her works at 7 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 2, in 127 Memorial Hall. Clifton, who served as poet laureate of Maryland from 1975-85, has won many fellowships and awards for her poetry collections and childrens books, including the Shelley Memorial Prize, a Charity Randall Citation, an Emmy Award from the American Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, selection as a Literary Lion by the New York Public Library and a Lannan Achievement Award in Poetry. Her work has received recognition as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. She is the only poet who has had two books listed as finalists for the Pulitzer Prize in the same year. Distinguished Professor of Humanities and the Hilda C. Landers Endowed chair in the liberal arts at St. Marys College in Maryland, Clifton has published 11 collections of her poetry, one autobiographical prose work and 19 childrens books. Clifton has appeared on the Today Show, Sunday Morning with Charles Kuralt, The Power of the Word with Bill Moyers and Nightline with Ted Koppel. Most recently she has been honored by the Cleveland Foundation with a Lifetime Achievement Award for contributions to the appreciation of the rich diversity of human cultures. Mercy, her most recent poetry book, was published in August. The reading is free and open to the public. A reception and book signing with be held in Memorial Halls dome after the reading.
