Marching Band joins Halloween parade

4:53 p.m., Oct. 26, 2004--UD’s 340-member Fightin’ Blue Hens Marching Band was among 1,500 participants in the 57th annual Halloween parade in Newark on Sunday, Oct. 24.

UD band members all were encouraged to wear costumes of their own choosing, Heidi I. Sarver, director, said. The band, which is usually on the road during the parade weekend, joined the parade to strengthen the University’s bonds with the Newark community, Sarver said.

Thousands of spectators lined the parade route along Main Street, from Tyre Avenue to North College Avenue. Also in the parade, sponsored by the Newark Parks & Recreation Department, were marching bands from Christiana, Newark, Glasgow and St. Mark’s high schools, as well as several Girl Scout, Boy Scout and Brownie troops.

The UD band’s selection of tunes for the parade included the UD fight song and John Philip Sousa marches.
