UD men’s basketball tops Widener 100-62

UD’s Andrew Washington
8:58 a.m., Nov. 5, 2004--The injury depleted University of Delaware men’s basketball team opened the 2004-05 season with a 100-62 exhibition game victory over Widener University on Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

The game provided a great look at the Fightin’ Blue Hens’ explosive newcomer, junior college transfer Andrew Washington, who scored 31 points and had seven rebounds, seven assists and six steals.

Washington, a native of Washington, D.C., who transferred to UD from Allen County Community College in Kansas, hit 13 of his 17 shots from the field, including two three-pointers.

Overall, UD shot 56.5 percent from the field, hitting 39 of 69 shots, and held a 50-34 rebounding advantage over Widener, an NCAA Division III team that went 18-8 last season.

In addition to Washington, four other Hens scored in double figures. Sophomore center Raphael Madera had 15 points and seven rebounds, senior forward Calvin Smith had 13 points and blocked four shots, senior point guard Mike Slattery had 12 points and seven assists, and sophomore forward Lebo Maepa scored 11 points and had nine rebounds.

Senior forward Robin Wentt led the team with 12 rebounds and also had seven points.

Several UD players, including Harding Nana, Herb Courtney, Rulon Washington, Henry Olawoye, Chris Prothro and newcomer Sam McMahon, were unable to play because of injuries.

UD will open the regular season with a game on Friday, Nov. 19, at Ohio State University.
