Former FBI chief speaks on the rule of law

11:22 a.m., Nov. 15, 2004--Justice, equity and adherence to the rule of law allow businesses to remain competitive and participate on an even playing field, according to Louis Freeh, vice chairperson and general counsel of MBNA and former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, during his speech at the Delaware State Chamber of Commerce Superstars in Business Awards luncheon, Nov. 10, in Wilmington.

Freeh said Americans are philosophically and morally dedicated to the rule of law, not only in international and governmental affairs, but on a daily basis. The standards of honesty and justice in this country are often taken for granted, he said, but U.S. courthouses, dedicated to upholding laws, allow citizens an extraordinary privilege, which many people worldwide do not have.

Even in wartime, American troops learn the rules of war and the importance of employing them, he said. “After our elections, no matter who won, we had armies of lawyers, not armed supporters.”

U.S. Sen. Thomas Carper also spoke at the luncheon, discussing Delaware’s global poultry industry and also recognizing the initiatives of Delaware businesses in providing health care for their employees.
