Israeli Parliament minister to speak

Avraham Burg
3:58 p.m., Oct. 8, 2004--Avraham Burg, one of the most paradoxical and charismatic members of the Israeli parliament, will speak at 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 14, in Room 115, Purnell Hall.

Burg, former speaker of the Knesset, an Orthodox Jew in the secular Labor Party, will discuss “Struggling Towards Peace in Times of Terror.” The event is sponsored by the Kristol Center for Jewish Life at UD, a Hillel Foundation, and will be followed by a reception at the Abe and Pearl Kristol Hillel Student Center.

Burg has been characterized as “one of the best speechmakers in politics.” Shimon Peres, former Prime Minister of Israel, is quoted as saying, “I want to thank [Avraham Burg] for his biting parliamentary spirit and the way he so jealously guarded the honor of the Knesset, improved its operation and elevated its status.”

In 1999, at age 44, Burg was elected speaker of the 15th Knesset. His most important priority was “to assert a hands-on role for parliament in the peace effort.” In a bold move that captivated national and international audiences alike, he became the first speaker to invite his Palestinian counterpart to address the parliament. He was one of the signees to the Geneva Accords proposal of 2003. Before being elected to the Knesset, Burg was director of the Jewish Agency for Israel.

Susan Detwiler, executive director of the Kristol Center, said, “This is a very exciting opportunity for us to bring together the campus and greater Delaware communities for a dynamic and enlightening evening about a very difficult topic. We hope that after the program, many people from both communities will join us at the Hillel Student Center and talk about Mr. Burg’s thought-provoking commentary.”

Cosponsoring the event, are the Blue Hens for Israel, Hillel Student Life, Jewish Studies, Political Science and International Relations and History departments.

The lecture is free and open to the public, however, the Kristol Center is requesting a $5 per person contribution to help defray the cost of this and other Israel programs.
