Open-access publishing set for discussion Oct. 20

James F. Williams II
11:39 a.m., Oct. 11, 2004--James F. Williams II, dean of libraries at the University of Colorado at Boulder, will lead a discussion on “Research with Open Access Publishing," at noon, Wednesday, Oct. 20, in Trabant University Center, on the UD’s Newark campus.

The discussion, which is open only to UD faculty, students and staff, will be held during the University Faculty Forum in the Trabant Multipurpose Room. A free buffet lunch will be served. The forum is sponsored by the Office of the Provost.

Open-access publishing is no-fee Internet access to works and data that are currently given away to publishers by researchers and scholars with no expectation of financial payment. Open access is considered an effective means to ensure broad distribution and use of information for public good.

Williams has held his current position since 1988. His career includes 13 years as a medical librarian and 18 years in research library administration. He is a member of the information technology board of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges (NASULGC) and the board of directors of the Center for Research Libraries.

Williams also is a member of the board of visitors for libraries at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a member of the visiting committee at the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Pittsburgh. He serves on the editorial board of College & Research Libraries, a scholarly research journal published by the Association of College & Research Libraries. He holds baccalaureate and graduate degrees from Morehouse College and Atlanta University.

Persons who plan to attend should make reservations by sending e-mail to [provost-office@udel.edu] by Monday, Oct. 18. For more information, call (302) 831-2102 or (302) 831-2231.
