Womens club soccer team wins regional title 4:43 p.m., Oct. 28, 2005--The University of Delawares women's club soccer team won the northeast regional champions after defeating three teams in a tournament at Fort Dix, N.J., during the weekend of Oct. 22-23. Samantha Watson, womens club soccer president, said the teams closest game in the tournament was in the quarterfinals against Yale. UD squeaked by after the game ended in a shoot out. Our goalie Ally Mooney saved the one shot to get us through to the next round, she said. After Yale, UD continued to win beating Penn State 2-0 in the semi-finals and Rutgers 3-0 in the final. We were all really excited to win, Watson said. Besides winning the championship, two players from the team were further recognized. Sophomore Amanda Breen was named the most valuable player of the tournament, and junior Ally Mooney was named most valuable goalkeeper of the tournament. The team will compete for the national title for the second straight season at the University of Alabama, on the weekend of Nov. 17-20. Last year they finished eight in the national championship, Watson said, and they are hoping to do even better this year. We really want to make it to at least the semifinals of the championships this year, she said. We hope to win the whole thing.
