Move-in day shuttle buses aim to ease congestion

2:14 p.m., Aug. 26, 2004--To reduce traffic tie-ups during the arrival of students on move-in day, Saturday, Aug. 28, UD is offering shuttle bus transportation to and from West Campus and from various campus locations to and from the UD Bookstore in the Perkins Student Center.

Rodney and Dickinson

With students moving into Rodney and Dickinson residence halls, more than 3,000 vehicles will be competing for limited parking space. To alleviate congestion and long waits on West Campus, drivers will be asked to move their vehicles immediately after unloading.

Maps indicating the various parking locations will be available at the West Campus unloading areas. The following sites, all within walking distance of West Campus, are suggested as possible parking areas after vehicles have been unloaded.

  • Trabant Parking Garage, West Main Street;
  • Hollingsworth, accessible from Cleveland Avenue and North College Avenue;
  • Newark Day Nursery (Barksdale Road); and
  • International Reading Association (Barksdale Road).

Because these parking areas may be full, guaranteed parking is available at the Delaware Field House, located next to Delaware Stadium, just off South College Avenue and across from the Daimler-Chrysler automobile assembly plant. This location also provides easy access to I-95.

Two buses will transport riders from the bus shelter directly in front of Delaware Field House to the Rodney Underpass opposite The Trap restaurant on Elkton Road at Amstel Avenue. Buses will be at each location every 15 to 20 minutes.

UD Bookstore shuttle buses

On Saturday, Aug. 28, buses also will be available to transport students, family and guests from key locations to the UD Bookstore.

Service with two buses in operation will begin at 8:45 a.m., from Laird Campus and the Perkins Student Center on Academy Street, with an estimated loop time of 30 minutes. At 10:30 a.m., two additional busses will be in service, reducing loop time to 15-minute intervals. Handcarts will be available to assist those with heavy packages.

One bus at each location will discontinue service at 3 p.m., and the second will discontinue service at 4 p.m.

UD Bookstore shuttle buses will stop at:

  • The rear of Clayton Hall (to be used by Pencader residents);
  • Christiana West Tower;
  • Rodney underpass (Elkton Road and Amstel Avenue); and
  • Perkins Student Center (Academy Street bus shelter).

The UD Bookstore in the Perkins Student Center will be open from 9 a.m.-7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 28, and from 10 a.m.-7 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 29.
