Blue Hens ranked No. 1 in ESPN/USA Today poll

4:05 p.m., Aug. 10, 2004--The University of Delaware football team has been ranked No. 1 in the preseason ESPN/USA Today NCAA Division I-AA poll announced Monday afternoon.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens finished the 2003 season ranked No. 1 after going 15-1 and winning the Division I-AA national championship. Earlier, both the Street and Smith’s and Lindy’s preseason college football publications had ranked the Hens No. 1.

UD earned 26 of the 35 first-place votes and had 863 total points in voting by Division I-AA head coaches and sports information directors.

UD was followed in the poll by Southern Illinois, which received six first-place votes, Montana, Wofford, which received one first-place vote, and Colgate. The Hens defeated Southern Illinois, Wofford and Colgate during the 2003 playoffs, topping Colgate 40-0 in the national championship game.

Rounding out the top 10 were Northern Iowa, McNeese State, Furman, Georgia Southern and Villanova. The remainder of the top 25 included Maine, Western Illinois, Northern Arizona, Western Kentucky, Montana State, Grambling State, Stephen F. Austin, Northwestern State, Massachusetts, Appalachian State, Northeastern, Lehigh, Eastern Kentucky, North Carolina A&T and Southern.
