Spirited Homecoming banners enliven Trabant

10:48 a.m., Sept. 29, 2004--Continuing a UD tradition, 23 colorful, Homecoming Weekend spirit banners, created by student groups, greet alumni and visitors to the Trabant University Center, proclaiming UD’s school spirit and anticipated football victory over the University of Maine’s Black Bears. The project is organized by UD’s student centers.

Sororities, fraternities and registered student groups made the banners, many featuring Delaware’s popular mascot YoUDee. The Student Centers Programming Advisory Board’s banner has the motto “Beat the Stuffin’ Out of “Em,” showing YoUDee in the ring with a knocked out bear with the stuffin’ coming out of him. The Geology Club’s banner proclaims “UD Rocks.” The Black Student Union’s entry features YoUDee with feathered fist clenched as a football sails over the goal post.

The banners will be judged during a parade by the student organizations at 3 p.m., Friday, Oct. 1, outside the Trabant University Center. The winning group will lead the football team onto the field with banner aloft during the Homecoming game and will receive $200 for its organization. The second-place winner’s name will be on the scoreboard and will receive $100, while the third-place winner will be announced over the public address system and receive $50.
