San Francisco 49ers like UD defensive back Adams

3:18 p.m., Aug. 12, 2004--Defensive back Mike Adams, a star on the University of Delaware’s 2003 NCAA Division I-AA national championship team, is getting a long look at cornerback in the San Francisco 49ers training camp.

Adams was featured in a story in the Aug. 4 issue of the San Francisco Chronicle, where 49ers secondary coach Ron Lynn said the Fightin’ Blue Hen is both versatile and extremely intelligent.

As a rookie free agent, Adams faces a difficult struggle to make the roster but is looking for every opportunity, including on special teams.

In other news from National Football League training camps involving Fightin’ Blue Hens, former NFL Most Valuable Player Rich Gannon is listed as the No. 1 quarterback on the Oakland Raiders depth chart as the team prepares for its preseason opener against Adams and the 49ers on Saturday night, Aug. 14, in Candlestick Park.

The Raiders list Shawn Johnson, an All-American on the 2003 championship team, as their No. 3 right defensive end, working behind Tyler Brayton and Bobby Hamilton. Oakland waived former UD running back Keith Burnell.

In the Philadelphia Eagles training camp, Andy Hall has moved up to be the No. 3 quarterback because of surgery to the knee of backup Koy Detmer. Hall is working behind starter Donovan McNabb and veteran backup Jeff Blake.

Other Hens in NFL training camps are wide receiver Jamin Elliott, who is with the Chicago Bears, and offensive lineman Jason Nerys, who is with the New York Jets.

In Green Bay, UD graduate Bob Slowik is preparing for his first game as the Packers’ defensive coordinator. The team goes into preseason action Monday night, Aug. 16, against the Seattle Seahawks. The game will be broadcast on ESPN.
