'Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel' at UD Feb. 19

4:44 p.m., Feb. 16, 2005--The story of Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel will be told in a musical in UD’s 2004-05 Family Performing Arts Series at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 19, in Mitchell Hall.

When modern machines threaten to put Mike Mulligan and his trusty steam shovel, Mary Anne, out of business, they travel to the small town of Popperville and accept one final challenge--to dig the town cellar in just one day. Based on the book by Virginia Lee Burton that has delighted young readers for 65 years, ArtsPower’s new musical portrays the value of hard work and unwaivering friendship and shows that the power of imagination can overcome any obstacle. The show is recommended for children in grades pre K through 3.

Tickets are $17 for the general public, $12 for UD faculty, staff, alumni and senior citizens and $5 for students and children. A 15 percent discount is available for group sales of 20 or more tickets per show.

For tickets, call the Hartshorn box office at (302) 831-2204, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays.

At noon, Friday, Feb. 18, the Hartshorn box office will stop selling tickets for the performance to allow for the transition to the Mitchell Hall box office. Any remaining tickets will be available for purchase in person at the Mitchell Hall box office beginning one hour before the scheduled start time of the performance.

The University of Delaware 2004-05 Performing Arts Series and Family Series are made possible, in part, by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency committed to promoting and supporting the arts in Delaware, as well as support by Embassy Suites-Newark/Wilmington South and Arby's.
