All-CAA basketball teams include Nana, Slattery

Harding Nana
9:38 a.m., March 4, 2005--Two University of Delaware men’s basketball players have been selected All-Colonial Athletic Association, with junior forward Harding Nana named to the first team and senior point guard Mike Slattery named to the third team.

Slattery also was named to the CAA All-Academic team. He is an honor student as a sport management major and earlier this season was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America District 2 All-Academic first team.

In addition, UD senior forward Calvin Smith was selected the winner of the conference’s Dean Ehlers Leadership Award for service both on and off the basketball court.

The All-CAA teams were announced during the men’s basketball awards banquet held Thursday night in Richmond, Va., in advance of the conference tournament that will begin tonight at the Richmond Coliseum. The Fightin’ Blue Hens will battle Towson University at 8 p.m.

Mike Slattery
Nana is the first UD player ever to earn first team All-CAA honors. In addition, he is the first Hen to earn first team all-conference honors since Mike Pegues was so recognized by the America East Conference in 2000.

Nana was joined on the first team by CAA Player of the Year Alex Loughton of Old Dominion University, Loren Stokes of Hofstra University, Nick George of Virginia Commonwealth University and John Goldsberry of the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

Nana leads the conference with 9.9 rebounds per game and is second with 18.2 points per game. He is currently fifth in NCAA Division I with 17 double-doubles on the year, games in which he scored 10 or more points and collected 10 or more rebounds.

Slattery was named to the third team for the second straight season after again leading the CAA in assists. He is tied for 13th in Division I with 6.5 assists per game, and currently ranks second in UD history and third in CAA history with 596 career assists
