UD women’s basketball extends winning streak

UD’s Tiffany Young scored 18 points in the victory over Drexel.
9:22 a.m., Jan. 7, 2005--The University of Delaware women’s basketball team extended its winning streak to seven games with a 57-48 victory over Drexel University in a Colonial Athletic Association contest played Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

Senior forward Tiffany Young led the Fightin’ Blue Hens with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Forward Tiara Malcom had 15 points, guard Tyresa Smith had eight points and three steals and guard Alena Koshansky had four assists, five steals and a key three-point basket with 1:31 left to play that sealed the victory.

UD held Drexel scoreless for just over eight minutes in the first half to build a 15-4 lead but the Dragons rallied to narrow the margin to 25-20 at the half.

Drexel tied the score at 34-34 with 8:49 left then held a lead for the next four minutes before the Hens tied it at 43-43 on a jumper by Malcom and took the lead for good on a lay-up by Young with 3:54 remaining.

Drexel cut the lead to two at 47-45 with 3:02 left but Malcom answered with two free throws, Koshansky hit the three-pointer and Julie Sailer followed with two free throws to put the game away.

The Hens, who improved to 9-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference, will play a key CAA game against perennial power Old Dominion University at 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 9, in Norfolk, Va.

Old Dominion, the 13-time defending conference champion, is 5-5 overall and 1-0 in the CAA.
