Gilbert P. Volmi
 

Jan. 27, 2005--Gilbert P. Volmi, 79, of Newark died Jan. 25 at his home.

Mr. Volmi was employed at the University of Delaware from 1966 until 1987, when he retired as director of food service.

Born in Paterson, N.J., Mr. Volmi served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. A graduate of Pennsylvania State University, he received his master's degree from Florida State University.

Mr. Volmi began his career as a university administrator at Vanderbilt University and later accepted positions at the universities of Tennessee and Maryland and Notre Dame University.

He was a member of many professional organizations, including the American College of University Housing Officers (ACUHO), the National Association of College and University Food Service (NACUFS) and the American Dietetic Association (ADA).

Active in the community, Mr. Volmi was a member of the Newark Country Club and served on the board of the Newark Senior Center.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Irene Gelcius Volmi; three children, the Rev. Dennis Volmi, U.S. Air Force chaplain, Germaine Chapis and her husband, Stephen, of Georgetown, and Andrea Jackson and her husband, Wyatt, of Dagsboro; and two grandchildren, Amy Lynn Jackson and Matthew Gilbert Jackson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 29, at Holy Angels Roman Catholic Church, 82 Possum Park Rd., Newark, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Interment will be private in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Dagsboro.
