Young violin virtuoso to hold master class

2:16 p.m., Jan. 27, 2005--Internationally acclaimed violinist Leila Josefowicz will hold a master class from 1:30-3:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 12, in 118 Amy E. Dupont Music Building.

Sponsored by the Delaware Symphony Orchestra (DSO) in cooperation with the UD music department, the master class is free and open to the public, and no reservations are required. During the class UD violin students will play for Josefowicz, who will critique their technique, style and artistic quality. She also will offer insights about musical careers to the students and audience.

Josefowicz will perform with the Delaware Symphony Orchestra at 8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 11, and at 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 13, at the Grand Opera House in Wilmington. The program will feature Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto and also Ravel’s Bolero and Valses nobles et sentimentales and Mussorgsky’s Introduction to Khovanshchina, with pre-performance lectures by DSO cellist Eugene Klein.

Tickets are $32-52 for Friday’s performance and $25 on Sunday. Student tickets for those 18 and under are $10, and $10 student rush tickets are available 30 minutes before curtain time for all students with valid IDs. All tickets are subject to a box office service charge.

She also has appeared on television on The Tonight Show, Evening at Pops and Live from Lincoln Center and was profiled on CBS Sunday Morning. Her performance of John Adams’ Violin Concerto, conducted by the composer, was televised and broadcast by BBC throughout Europe.

A recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1994, Josefowicz is a graduate of Curtis Institute of Music.
