UD runners, throwers excel in indoor track

9:41 a.m., Jan. 18, 2005--The University of Delaware indoor track and field teams competed in two meets last weekend, with freshman runners leading the way at the New York City Collegiate Invitational meet on Friday and the weight throwers putting in a strong performance at the Father Diamond Invitational on Saturday at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.

Freshman Will Jukowski won the men’s 800-meter run in 1:55.57 and freshman Colleen O’Brien won the women’s mile run in 5:12.03 in action Friday at the New York City Armory. Also, senior Casey Bennett won the women’s pole vault with a jump of 10 feet, 11-3/4 inches.

Also for the UD men, Rashaad Woodard finished fifth, and Roger Brown finished sixth in the 60-meter dash. Chris Dixon finished seventh and Charlie Williams finished 10th in the 400-meter dash.

Also for the UD women, Brittany Wright finished fourth in the 200-meter dash in a school record time of 25.45, and Kaitlin McGowan and Amy Miller tied for fourth in the pole vault, clearing 9 feet, 6-1/4 inches. Kate Klim finished seventh in the 3,000 meters, Kristen Frustillo finished seventh in the 200 meters and 10th in the 400 meters, Toni Riggi finished eighth in the mile and Rayna Horsey finished 10th in the 200 meters.

Leading the way for the UD weight throwers on Saturday was senior Mike Yost, who finished second in the weight throw with a toss of 51 feet, 11 inches and sixth in the shot put with a throw of 44 feet, 10-3/4 inches.

Also for the men, freshman Kyle Casella finished sixth in the weight throw and 10th in the shot put, and senior Hao Guan finished seventh in the weight throw and 11th in the shot put.

For the UD women, sophomore Rachel Young finished third in the weight throw (40 feet, 5-1/2 inches) and ninth in the shot put.

Also for the women, freshman Lisa Weeks finished fourth in the shot put and fifth in the weight throw, and sophomore Stephanie Cronk finished sixth in the weight throw.

UD will return to action Saturday, Jan. 22, when the Fightin’ Blue Hens host the second Delaware Invitational of the season at the Delaware Field House.
