A10’s James Madison wins national title

10:59 a.m., Dec. 20, 2004--For the second straight year, the NCAA Division I-AA national football champion is a member of the highly competitive Atlantic 10 Football Conference.

Last year, the University of Delaware football team defeated Colgate University 40-0 to claim the title on a snowy December night in Chattanooga, Tenn.

This year, James Madison University won the championship, defeating the University of Montana 31-21 on Friday, Dec. 17, again in Chattanooga. Sophomore running back Maurice Fenner and sophomore quarterback Justin Rascati each ran for a pair of touchdowns to lead James Madison to the title.

James Madison became the third different team from the Atlantic 10 Football Conference to win the title, joining UD and the University of Massachusetts, which won in 1998. For the first time since the playoff field expanded to 16 teams in 1986, different teams from the same league have won consecutive national titles.

“That was Atlantic 10 football in the second half. Our league is by far the best in the country,” James Madison Head Coach Mickey Matthews said. “I thought there were several teams in our league who could have been in the tournament and I think the play in our league really prepared us to play in this environment.”

James Madison defeated the Fightin’ Blue Hens 20-13 on Nov. 6 in Harrisonburg, Va.
