Stephens, Beridze lead Delaware swimmers

9:17 a.m., Dec. 7, 2004--Sara Stephens won two events and broke her own school record in the 200 butterfly, and Levan Beridze captured both the 50 and 100 freestyle events to lead University of Delaware competitors at the Bucknell University Swimming and Diving Invitational last weekend in Lewisburg, Pa.

The UD women finished fourth in the team standings with 464 points. The University of New Hampshire won the team championship with 974 points, and was followed by host Bucknell University with 879 and Fordham University with 520. La Salle University finished fifth in the five-team field with 448.

The UD men finished fourth, as well, with 464 points. LaSalle won the men’s team championship with 1,018 points and was followed by Fordham with 790.5 and Bucknell with 688.5. New Hampshire finished fifth in the five-team field with 227.

Stephens won 100 butterfly in a time of 57.00 and the 200 butterfly, breaking her own school record with a time of 2:05.53. She also finished second in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.21), third in the 200 individual medley (2:11.50), third in the 400 freestyle relay (3:38.03), fourth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:41.04) and fourth in the 200 medley relay (1:51.18).

Also for the UD women, Meredith Law won the 1,650 freestyle (17:23.31) and was third in the 400 freestyle relay, 500 freestyle (5:10.58) and 400 individual medley (4:41.06). Ellen Heinz finished third in the 400 freestyle relay and 100 freestyle (54.38) and fourth in the 50 freestyle (25.13), the 200 freestyle relay and the 200 medley relay. Heinz also finished fifth in the 500 freestyle (5:13.52).

For the UD men, Beridze won the 50 freestyle in 21.56 and the 100 freestyle in 47.46 and finished second in the 400 freestyle relay (3:11.75) and 200 freestyle relay (1:27.30). Adam Blomberg finished second in the 400 freestyle relay, third in the 200 freestyle relay, fourth in the 100 freestyle (48.20) and 200 freestyle (1:44.98), and fifth in the 200 butterfly (2:03.13). Also, Andrew Zinn finished second in the 400 freestyle relay, third in the 200 freestyle relay and fourth in the 50 freestyle (21.92).
