UD men’s basketball loses Maepa to injury

Lebo Maepa
10:22 a.m., Dec. 16, 2004--Injuries continue for the University of Delaware men’s basketball team, which has announced that sophomore forward Lebo Maepa will miss up to four weeks of action after surgery to his left knee.

"Our doctors found a small tear in Lebo's miniscus, so they need to go in and clean it up to get rid of the pain he is experiencing," UD Head Coach David Henderson said. "If everything goes smoothly, we hope to have him back in two to four weeks."

The latest injury follows on the news that senior point guard Mike Slattery will miss several weeks with a broken thumb. Already the Fightin’ Blue Hens were without junior guard Chris Prothro, who is out for the season after ankle surgery, sophomore forward Herb Courtney, who is out indefinitely after a knee injury suffered last season, and sophomore forward Henry Olawoye, who is out for several more weeks with compartmental syndrome.

The most recent injuries leave the Hens with just eight scholarship players available when they travel to Puerto Rico to compete in the San Juan Shootout next week.

Maepa had appeared in all seven games this season and started the season-opener at Ohio State University. He is averaging 2.9 points per game and ranks second on the team with 4.1 rebounds per game.
