Michael E. Lee

Dec. 8, 2004--Michael E. Lee, 59, of Wilmington, died Dec. 2 at home.

A UD alumnus, he headed UD's financial aid office for many years.

Born in Springfield, Ill., Mr. Lee was a graduate of Feitchan's High School, where he was an All-City, All-State, All-American football player. He went to the University of Iowa on a full football scholarship. After becoming injured, he finished his undergraduate degree in philosophy at Milliken University in Decatur, Ill.

He came to Delaware in 1969 as a graduate student, where he received his master's degree in philosophy.

Mr. Lee worked for York College, then joined the staff of the University of Delaware in 1974 as student employment coordinator in the then Office of Financial Aid. He was named assistant director of the office in 1980 and became director in 1985.

In 1992, Mr. Lee moved to Wilmington College, assuming the position of dean of admissions and financial aid until his retirement.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Susan Clark Lee, who is foreign student and scholar adviser at UD; his father, Irvin D. Lee of Springfield, Ill.; his longtime friend and brother, Elrod; and several other close friends.

A fund in Mr. Lee's memory has been established at the University. Contributions--made payable to the University of Delaware with the notation "Michael E. Lee Scholarship Fund" on the memo line--may be sent to: Michael E. Lee Scholarship Fund, c/o Joe Bradley, 113 Townsend Hall, University of Delaware, Newark, DE 19716-2103. Funds will benefit Native American students attending the University of Delaware.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 12, in Room 125 Clayton Hall.
