UD’s Sidney Haugabrook first team All-American

11:07 a.m., Dec. 13, 2004--University of Delaware senior Sidney Haugabrook has been named a first team Walter Camp Football Foundation All-American in NCAA Division I-AA.

Haugabrook, a co-captain of the 2004 team that shared the Atlantic 10 Football Conference championship and reached the NCAA Division I-AA tournament quarterfinals, was one of 25 players honored in voting conducted by sports information directors and head football coaches in the division.

Haugabrook, a defensive back and kick returner, is the first member of the Fightin’ Blue Hens to be named a first team All-American since George Schmitt was honored by the Associated Press in 1982.

The Walter Camp team was the first All-America team announced this season. The Sports Network, American Football Coaches Association and Associated Press all plan to announce their All-America teams next week.

Haugabrook had 67 tackles on the season, including 65 solo stops, and added 2.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, seven pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles. Also one of the nation's most feared kick returners, he averaged 11.4 yards on 27 punt returns, returning two for touchdowns, and averaged 27.0 yards on 27 kickoff returns, returning one for a touchdown.

For his career, Haugabrook set seven school records. They are for career starts (51), consecutive starts (51), tackles by a cornerback (303), punt returns yards in a career (937), punt returns for a touchdown in a season (2) and career (3), and kickoff returns yards in a season (728). He also recorded 12 career interceptions and 26 pass breakups.

Other Atlantic 10 Conference selections were quarterback Lang Campbell of the College of William and Mary, wide receiver David Ball of the University of New Hampshire, offensive lineman Adam Bourget of Northeastern University and defensive back Shannon James of the University of Massachusetts.
