St. Louis Cardinals promote ex-Hen Gorecki

Reid Gorecki
8:59 a.m., Jan. 7, 2005--The St. Louis Cardinals have named former University of Delaware outfielder Reid Gorecki to the team’s 40-man roster after his stellar performance with the club's Arizona Fall League team.

Gorecki, who was taken by St. Louis in the 13th round of the Major League Baseball draft in 2002, hit for a .365 average with nine doubles, four steals and 15 walks in 102 at bats for the Mesa Solar Sox this fall.

Prior to his assignment at Mesa, Gorecki played for the Tennessee Smokies in the Class AA Southern League and for the Palm Beach Cardinals in the Class A Florida State League. In 25 at bats for the Smokies, he hit .320 after making a seamless late season transition from Palm Beach, where he hit.277.

Bruce Manno, farm team director for the defending National League champion Cardinals, said Gorecki “had a good season. He did well when he went to Tennessee and in the playoffs. Having an opportunity to go to the fall league was another chance for him to face more experienced pitching, and he handled it very well."

While at UD, Gorecki had a standout season in 2002. He led the team with a .414 batting average and 22 stolen bases. He and Steve Van Note tied for the team home run lead with 12.

When St. Louis opens spring training, Gorecki will be on the roster as a center fielder.

Two other UD players are currently on the rosters of Major League teams, outfielder Kevin Mench with the Texas Rangers and pitcher Mike Koplove with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
