Jan. 10, 2005--Herbert Heiss Flickinger, 88, of Wilmington and Rehoboth Beach, died Jan. 8.
A graduate of Wilmington High School, Mr. Flickinger earned his bachelors degree in agriculture in 1940 at the University of Delaware, where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. After he graduated, he remained an active supporter of the University, including funding a scholarship in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. In 1979, he and his wife, Catherine Burke Flickinger, were named outstanding alumni of the year.
During World War II, he served in the 5th U.S. Army Air Corps, stationed in the Pacific.
He was the founder of By-Products Inc., a commodities brokerage firm, and was also a major partner in the Atlantic Sands Hotel in Rehoboth.
Mr. Flickinger was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Wilmington Country Club and Rehoboth Beach Country Club.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, who is trustee emeritus on the Universitys Board of Trustees; three grandchildren, Burke Jr., Cole and his wife, Tonya, and Elizabeth; and his special caregivers, Raynee Anthony and Chandra Saroop. The Flickingers son, H. Burke Flickinger Sr., died Jan. 10, 2004.
A viewing will be held from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 12, at the McCrery Memorial Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Talleyville, where the funeral service will held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 13. Interment will be at Lower Brandywine Cemetery.
