Prof named ACSM fellow

William Farquhar, assistant professor of health and exercise sciences
3:37 p.m., Dec. 20, 2004--William Farquhar, UD assistant professor of health and exercise sciences, was recently named a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).

A world-renowned sports medicine organization whose members include physicians, exercise scientists and physical therapists, ACSM selects only a small percentage of its members as fellows.

To be considered for candidacy, Farquhar had to submit an application documenting both his research contributions to the field of sports medicine and his service to the ACSM through dedicated committee work. Two current ACSM fellows also had to champion Farquhar with letters of recommendation.

“The honor [of being elected to fellow status] is in contributing to an organization that brings together scientists, educators and physicians, all with the goal of advancing health,” Farquhar said.

“Attaining fellow status is less about distinguishing oneself from others and more about getting involved in the governance of the organization,” he said. “The stated purpose of the fellow program is to not only recognize professional achievement and service to the college, but also to encourage continued professional development and service to the college.”

Farquhar, who has always had an interest in the health benefits of physical activity, said that his involvement with ACSM keeps him motivated about staying informed on the latest sports medicine-related research and trends.

“There is surprisingly a lot of overlap between those studying athletic performance and those studying the health benefits of regular exercise,” he said, “and ACSM is the perfect organization to bring these two groups together and learn and get inspired from these interactions.”

Farquhar earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education and exercise physiology and his master’s in cardiac rehabilitation and exercise science from East Stroudsburg University. He earned his doctoral degree in exercise physiology from Pennsylvania State University.

Farquhar joined UD’s Department of Health and Exercise Sciences in 2002 and has published many articles in the American Journal of Physiology, Circulation and Hypertension.
