John Bishop receives national honor
The award is the highest honor offered by AUCCCD to counseling center directors who have had distinguished careers with roles including administration, clinical service delivery, research, publishing, professional service, teaching and supervision. Bishop received the award along with Judith K. Mack, retired director of the Counseling Center at the University of California at Davis, and Gerald L. Stone, retired director of the Counseling Center at the University of Iowa. Greg Snodgrass, director of the counseling center and assistant vice president for student affairs at Texas State University, said Bishop is highly regarded by his peers across the country. When you look at Johns work, the focus of his writings and presentations, the grant projects he has pursued, what you find--in addition to the significant depth of his work--is great breadth, Snodgrass, past president of AUCCCD, said. John has exemplified the ideal counseling center professional who has been able to link the purpose and mission of counseling center work to the larger student development concept. Bishop said he owes the honor to the extraordinarily competent and dedicated staff of psychologists and psychiatrists at UD, as well as support and understanding by his wife, Kathy, and children, Samantha and Andrew. I feel very honored by this national recognition because I was nominated and selected by my professional peers, Bishop said. Knowing that only a few counseling center directors have ever received this prestigious award is also very humbling. Bishop earned his doctoral degree from Ohio State in 1968 and interned at Duke University before he began his career as a psychologist in UDs counseling center in 1969. He served as director of the center for 28 years before he was appointed to his current position. Bishop also is a professor of education and has been teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate level for more than 35 years. He has published more than 30 journal and monograph articles and book chapters in a broad range of professional publications and given more than 30 presentations at AUCCCD and other national, regional and local conferences. John has contributed a great deal to the profession of psychology as a whole through his cultivation and featuring of the specialty of working in a university counseling center, Carol Hagans Hartill, director of the counseling and consultation center at Butler University in Indianapolis, said. He is a pillar of this organization. Article by Martin Mbugua To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
