Newark 2004 Youth Police Academy 11:40 a.m., April 29, 2004--The Newark Police Department is holding its third annual Youth Police Academy, for 36 children from ages 12-17, from June 21-June 25. The program provides an opportunity for young people interested in law enforcement and/or emergency services as a career to learn firsthand about these professions. The cost is $100. Officers from the Newark Police Department and officers and emergency services personnel from agencies throughout Delaware will participate in the academy. Academy cadets will participate in a disciplined paramilitary environment and have classes on modern day police academics, leadership, cohesive team building, crime scene processing and cultural diversity, as well as daily physical fitness activity. The academy also will take a day trip to Washington, D.C., to visit the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and Visitors Center, followed by a visit to the Smithsonian Institute. A formal graduation ceremony will be held at 7:30 p.m., June 25, in 120 Smith Hall. To attend the camp, fill out a registration form in person at the Parks and Recreation Department in the Newark Municipal Building, 220 Elkton Rd.
