Hens Riley, Gemmill win cross country titles

10:09 a.m., Sept. 15, 2003--The University of Delaware men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2003 seasons with impressive showings as Patrick Riley and Erin Gemmill won individual titles and the Fightin’ Blue Hen men's team captured the team title at the Towson Invitational held Saturday at Oregon Ridge.

Riley, an All-Colonial Athletic Association selection who led the team in all eight races in which he competed last year, captured the individual title in a time of 26:00 over the five-mile course to lead the Blue Hen men to the team title.

Delaware posted 25 team points to claim the title and outdistance Virginia Commonwealth (51), Hofstra (81), Maryland-Eastern Shore (96), host Towson (113), Coppin State (178) and Morgan State (206).

In the women's meet, Hofstra took the team title with 43 points followed by Towson (57), Delaware (79), Virginia Commonwealth (81), George Mason (108), Maryland-Eastern Shore (181), Towson B (192), Morgan State (242) and Coppin State (272).

Gemmill, who led the Hens in all eight races in which she competed in 2002, including four first-place finishes, won her fifth career title with a time of 17:43 over the 4,700 meter course.

Riley was one of six Blue Hen runners to place in the top 10 for the UD men. Mike Sadowsky was third (26:46), freshman P.J. Meany was fifth (27:01), Kevin DuPrey was seventh (27:17), Peter Kane was ninth (27:24) and Patrick Wilcox was 10th (27:35).

In the women's race, Delaware's Kate Klim was 14th (19:04), Sari Weissbard was 16th (19:17) and freshman Toni Riggi was 22nd (19:40).

Both UD teams return to action on Saturday, Sept. 20, when they host the Delaware Invitational at White Clay Creek State Park.
