9:11 a.m., March 25, 2004--The University of Delaware women’s lacrosse team lost a heartbreaker, falling 9-8 in triple overtime to No. 13-ranked Northwestern University in a game played Wednesday night at Rullo Stadium.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens (2-4) were led by senior Michelle Campolettano, who scored three goals and added an assist, and freshman Jenny Diana, who scored two goals.

UD sophomore goalkeeper Patrice Hughes tied a season-high with 10 saves in more than 66 minutes of stellar action in the net.

UD will return to action at 1 p.m., Sunday, March 28, when the Hens open their Colonial Athletic Association season at Towson University.

Against Northwestern, the entire game was hard-fought. The Hens trailed just 3-2 at the break and then scored three unanswered goals by Becky Zane, Erin Edell and Diana to open the second half.

Northwestern’s Lindsay Munday scored to draw the Wildcats to within one goal at 5-4 then Diana scored again to extend the UD lead.

Northwestern answered with goals by Kristen Kjellman and Munday to tie the game 6-6 at the end of regulation.

Northwestern scored quickly in the first of two three-minute overtime periods as Sarah Albrecht found the net at 2:10 to put the Wildcats ahead 7-6.

UD responded with goals in the second overtime period by Campolettano and sophomore Kristin Cellucci at 1:23 to take a 8-7 lead, but Northwestern's Kjellman scored late to force the first triple overtime game in UD women's lacrosse history.

In the third overtime period, UD’s Zane got off a shot that went wide before Munday scored the game-winner for Northwestern.
