Winter Commencement facts

3:57 p.m., Jan. 10, 2004--Although Winter Commencement took place in the new year, the latest graduates are officially members of the Class of 2003, since they completed their degree requirements in August and December. In all, 1,494 degrees were conferred Jan. 10 to students, including 97 doctoral degrees, 301 master’s degrees, 1,088 bachelor’s degrees and eight associate degrees

  • The youngest graduate was Jennifer Mary Zosh, 20, who received a bachelor’s degree in psychology.
  • The most mature graduate was Vandana Rustum Singh, 84, who received a master’s degree in economics.
  • Graduates represent 37 states and 41 countries. States with the most graduating seniors include Delaware, 592; Pennsylvania, 149; New Jersey, 149; New York, 90; and Maryland, 69.
  • The flags on stage at the ceremony celebrated the American states and territories—and more than 100 foreign countries—represented among UD’s student body. The presentation of flags pays tribute to University benefactor Pierre S. du Pont, who played a leadership role in establishing the University’s study abroad program—the first program of its kind in the world. Du Pont Hall is named in his honor. UD is currently ranked sixth among all colleges and universities in the number of students participating in study abroad programs.
