Use Wellness dollars and win

3:17 p.m., March 11, 2004--The Employee Wellness Center is offering a series of programs to help employees spring into shape while also earning a chance to win special gifts by using their Wellness dollars.

Employees who spend all 50 of their Wellness dollars by June 15 will automatically be entered into a drawing to win prizes that include:

  • Dinner for two at the Blue and Gold Club,
  • $50 gift certificate to the UD Bookstore, or
  • $75 gift certificate to the Back Burner Restaurant.

Seven ways to spend Wellness dollars are available this spring.

Step into spring

The Wellness Center offers a pedometer-walking program that runs from April 4 through May 29. Participants in the eight-week program will receive a free pedometer ($25 value) to keep track of their steps as they walk at home, work or at the gym.

The Wellness Center will offer pedometer “try outs” during a pair of free walking clinics on Monday, March 15, and Thursday, March 18. Registration deadline is Friday, March 19. For more information, and to register, visit [www.udel.edu/wellness].

Strength training 101

A lecture on strength training will be held at noon, Wednesday, March 17, in 125 Alfred Lerner Hall (formerly MBNA America Hall). Strength training can prevent loss of muscle and bone and also can help with weight loss. The lecture will stress the basics of strength training and provide participants an opportunity to practice strength-training techniques. Register online at [www.udel.edu/wellness].

Diabetes screening

Many persons have diabetes and are not aware of it. Participants can have their blood sugar tested from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Tuesday, April 13, in 310 Gore Hall. Results are immediate. To schedule a five-minute appointment, call 831-8388.

Back care program

A presentation that includes simple exercises and easy tips to keep your back in shape will be held from 12:05-12:55 p.m., Wednesday, April 28, in 130 General Services Building. Register online at [www.udel.edu/wellness].

Humor program

Elaine Lundberg presents “No More Bummers,” from 12:05-12:55 p.m., Tuesday, April 20, in Bacchus at the Perkins Student Center. A nationally acclaimed speaker, Lundberg will share her insights about how employees can incorporate positive humor into their personal and professional lives. The talk is cosponsored by the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program and the Office of Human Resources. One door-prize winner will receive an autographed copy of Lundberg’s book, “No More Bummers! 121 Ways to Add Levity to Your Life.” Register online at [www.udel.edu/wellness].

Osteoporosis screening

Christiana Care Imaging Services will offer a screening test for osteoporosis (using the heel) for employees and retirees over age 40, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Monday, May 3, in 122 Old College. The five-minute appointment provides immediate results and a letter to your healthcare provider if more testing is needed. To schedule an appointment, call 831-8388.

Women and heart disease lecture

“A Heart to Heart Talk About the Female Heart,” with Dr. Kathleen McNicholas, Christiana Care heart surgeon and heart patient, will be held from 12:05-12:55 p.m., Wednesday, May 12, in 125 Alfred Lerner Hall. McNicholas will discuss how the disease differs in women and will review warning signs and offer strategies to prevent heart disease. Register online at [www.udel.edu/wellness].
