Wellness Center programs help New Year’s resolutions

10:01 a.m., Dec. 19, 2003--Gray winter days and mountains of holiday leftovers can add challenges to New Year’s resolutions. But, if sticking to a diet and exercise regimen are on your list of goals for 2004, UD’s Employee Wellness Center can help.

Dedicated to keeping University personnel in the pink of health, the center is offering a range of programs designed to get resolutions off to a running start and keep them going for years to come.

The following is a list of programs—both ongoing and date-specific—offered by the center during the month of January.

Fresh Start to Fitness is a three-part wellness program that offers a choice of an initial fitness assessment, two months of personal training checkups and/or cholesterol, diabetes and blood pressure screenings.

The fitness evaluation, which is called First Step to Fitness, takes 30 minutes to complete and gives statistics on resting heart rate and blood pressure, body composition, cardiovascular endurance and muscle fitness. Participants walk away with a written report and recommendations for a fitness routine. The assessment is offered throughout the month of January and costs 25 Wellness dollars.

Focus on Fitness, the personal training check-up program, offers the perfect complement to the initial assessment. Geared for busy employees, this service keeps exercise regimens on track by way of phone and e-mail check-ups from fitness experts every two weeks for two months. The cost of this service is 25 Wellness dollars and can be registered for during the First Step to Fitness evaluation.

Know Your Numbers wraps together the total health picture by offering a blood pressure, blood cholesterol and blood sugar report. From 4-6 p.m., Monday, Jan. 12, and from 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 14, employees can get cholesterol, diabetes and blood pressure checks all within the space of 15 minutes. Screenings will take place in Room 127 at the Carpenter Sports Building. The cost is 15 Wellness dollars and a $5 co-pay. (Pre-registration for this service is required by phone; no online registrations will be accepted.)

Two lunchtime lectures, The Fountain of Youth and The New American Plate, offer sound advice on two common health concerns. The Fountain of Youth, which runs from 12:05-12:55 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 21, offers tips on aging gracefully and increasing longevity. It will be led by Marianne Carter, a registered dietician, and Linda Smith, an exercise physiologist. The cost is 10 Wellness dollars, and those participating are eligible to win a $25 gift certificate to the Blue & Gold Club. The New American Plate, which runs from 12:05-12:55 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 28, will outline the latest nutrition guidelines, demonstrate portion sizes and help dieters devise strategies to keep the weight off. The cost is 10 Wellness dollars and entitles participants to a drawing for a one-year family membership to the Delaware Museum of Natural History.

For employees too busy to attend lunchtime lectures, the center will also offer a new e-mail service beginning in January. Starting Wednesday, Jan. 14, and continuing through Wednesday, June 30, the center will e-mail health tips once a week to employees registered for the service. Tips will cover a broad range of topics that address the physical, mental, social, spiritual and emotional aspects of wellness. The cost for this service is 10 Wellness dollars and includes a chance to win a $25 gift certificate to Harry’s Savoy Grill. Employees interested in this service must register by Tuesday, Jan. 13.
