New UD web proxy improves service

3:05 p.m., Sept. 30, 2003--UD students, faculty, and staff who access the Internet by first connecting to an Internet service provider (ISP)—e.g., Comcast, AOL, Earthlink—have been using a service called web proxy to access web-based information whose use is restricted, by license, to the University community.

The method of using the web proxy service has recently changed.

For the last six weeks, UD has been phasing in an improved method of granting UD users of another ISP access to restricted information. On Wednesday, Oct. 1, the old method of using UD’s web proxy service will be discontinued.

Users of the web proxy service who have not already done so should visit [http://www.udel.edu/topics/connect/webproxy] to learn how to use the improved web proxy service.

Why is this change being made?
The new implementation of UD’s web proxy service solves several problems reported by users of Netscape and Internet Explorer. The new web proxy service works with the following web browsers:

  • Internet Explorer 5.x (and later)
  • Mozilla 1.3 (and later)
  • Netscape 4.x (and later)
  • Safari 1.x (and later).

Who is affected by this change?
If you use an ISP to reach the University’s network, you will need to use UD’s web proxy server to access restricted UD Library databases, the UDeploy software site and some other resources on the campus network.

If you live in a non-University apartment complex that provides data connections, you also will need to use UD’s web proxy server.

Who is not affected by this change?
On-campus users and off-campus users who dial in directly to the University of Delaware do NOT need to use a proxy server with their web browser.

For further assistance
If you need further assistance, or if you find a resource that is not available from off campus using UD’s web proxy, visit the IT Help Center web site at [http://www.udel.edu/help], send an e-mail to [consult@udel.edu] or phone 831-6000.
